These requirements cover portable spray hose nozzles intended for use with fire department equipment and for use with fire hose mounted on standpipe systems.
Requirements for the installation and use of hose nozzles are included in the Standard for Standpipe and Hose Systems, NFPA 14, and in the Standard for the Care, Use, and Service Testing of Fire Hose, Including Connections and Nozzles, NFPA 1962.
Nozzles covered by these requirements include trade sizes of 3/4-, 1-, 1-1/2-, and 2-1/2-inch, or as determined by trade sizes of a hose or coupling or both. Nozzles may be basic spray, constant flow (gallonage), or constant pressure types.
Nozzles are rated for use at an inlet pressure of 100 psig (689 kPa) or higher.
Nozzles are investigated for use on:
- Class A and B fires, or
- Class A, B, and C fires.
Nozzles are intended for use with either rubber-lined hose or unlined hose.
A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those in use when the standard was developed, and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to maintain the level of safety for the user of the product as originally anticipated by the intent of this standard.
