1.1 These requirements cover low level path marking and lighting systems, including photo-luminescent, self-luminous, and externally powered systems, for indoor installation in low level locations on floors, or on walls at or near the floor, to provide a visual delineation of the path of egress during emergency situations. These systems are intended for installation and use as required by building and fire safety codes such as the Life Safety Code, NFPA 101; the National Building Code sponsored by the Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA); the Standard Building Code sponsored by the Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI); and the Uniform Building Code sponsored by the International Congress of Building Officials (ICBO).
1.2 Photo-luminescent marking systems include such materials as sheeting, adhesive-backed laminates, and paints and inks, and require no external power supply to activate their luminescent properties other than exposure to ambient light.
1.3 Self-luminous systems include constructions as defined in 2.10.
1.4 Externally powered lighting systems include varying designs of electric lamps that may be intended for connection to any combination of normal power supply, emergency power supply, and battery backup.
