STANDARD FOR SAFETY FOR MARINE ELECTRIC MOTORS AND GENERATORS(CRANKING, OUTDRIVE TILT, TRIM TAB, GENERATORS, ALTERNATORS)
Scope
These requirements cover engine-cranking motors, outdrive-tilt motors, power trim-tab motors, generators, and alternators rated less than 50 volts direct current.
The products covered by these requirements are intended for installation and use in accordance with the applicable requirements of the Standard for Fire Protection of Pleasure and Commercial Motor Craft, NFPA 302, or the United States Coast Guard.
The requirements also cover components, such as cranking motor solenoids, generator or alternator voltage regulators, and connecting wiring provided by the product manufacturer.
These requirements cover nonignition-protected components that are intended to be mounted outside of spaces requiring ignition-protected equipment and are marked accordingly [see 18.1(e)], as well as ignition-protected components.
A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those in use when the Standard was developed, and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to maintain the level of safety for the user of the product as originally anticipated by the intent of this Standard.
