This Technical Report addresses the performance parameters that should be considered for ATM Technology intended for integration into networks which support voiceband services. The document provides discussion on ATM technology that performs one or more of the following functions: echo canceller function; interworking function (Between the ATM and the non-ATM domain); multiplexing function; switching function; and transport function. Guidelines for acceptable transmission performance operating limits for these ATM functional network elements are provided. These guidelines will assist manufacturers in the design of this ATM technology and network implementers in understanding and specification of the parameters required to properly identify the performance requirements of equipment they wish to acquire. Because the guidelines presented in this report are based only on voice transmission quality criteria, it should be noted that other criteria, e.g. the ability of these devices to support digital data and multimedia services, may present a requirement for more restrictive performance parameter thresholds.
