Since the late 1950s, the eye pattern, as viewed at the input of a detector, has proven a practical and effective means of analyzing the performance of digital systems and equipment. A later development has been the use of a picture of an individual pulse or an eye pattern, unaffected by intersymbol interference or jitter, and viewed at an interface point.
