Preface
This is the sixth edition of CSA O177, Qualification code for manufacturers of structural glued-laminated timber . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2006, 1989, 1981, 1977, and 1965. This Standard specifies the qualification procedures to be performed by manufacturers in order to produce glued-laminated timber (Glulam) in accordance with CSA O122. The following are the major changes to this edition: a) Qualification procedures for block-glued and re-glued Glulam have been added to Annex B. b) The process and requirements for qualifying adhesives have been revised. c) Clause A.3 has been significantly modified, with the requirement of a full-scale column test eliminated and the test protocols modified to harmonize more closely with U.S. requirements. d) A non-mandatory commentary (see Annex H) has been added to the Standard to provide historical background and rationale for the changes made within the Standard. Additionally, the commentary provides background and technical support for those using the revised Annex A.3. This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Glued-Laminated Timber under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Solid and Engineered Wood Products, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. We would like to thank all those who participated and supported the development of this Standard. We are fortunate to have the support of many technical organizations, universities, businesses, and individuals who have donated their time to the development of this Standard.
Scope
1.1 Introduction
Glulam is an engineered wood product that requires precise manufacturing at all stages of fabrication. The finished product can only be tested under laboratory conditions; therefore, quality control of manufacturing is necessary to ensure the properties of Glulam are commensurate with the specified strengths assigned to Glulam in accordance with CSA O86. This Standard outlines requirements for the qualification of shop manufacturers of laminated structural timber that is pressure-glued using clamps or mechanical means other than nailing. Note: Qualification requirements for block-glued and re-glued Glulam are covered in Clauses B.2and B.3.
1.2 Inclusions
This Standard outlines requirements for determining the initial and continuing suitability of a plant’s personnel, equipment, and procedures to manufacture structural Glulam in accordance with CSA O122. This Standard qualifies individual plants. If more than one plant is operated by one manufacturer, then each plant will require separate qualification.
1.3 Exclusions
Certification of Glulam is not covered by this Standard. The manufacture of Glulam is covered by CSA O122. The process of glue laminating using mobile or temporary facilities is not covered by this Standard.
1.4 Terminology
In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
1.5 Dual measurements
The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. Values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
Note: See Annex G for conversion into yard/pound equivalents.
