API’s third edition of “Security Guidelines for the Petroleum Industry,” is now in use at oil and gas facilities around the world to help managers decide how to deter terrorist attacks. Covering all segments of the industry (production, refining, transportation, pipeline, and marketing), this guidance builds on the existing solid foundation of design and operational regulations, standards and recommended practices, which relate to facility design and safety, environmental protection, emergency response, and protection from theft and vandalism.
Produced in close collaboration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies, these guidelines, viewed as a living document, are broadly applicable to facility security in light of September 11, 2001, and provide the starting point for developing security plans at oil and natural gas facilities and operations.
