This is a Technical Report approved by T1M1.3 which discusses the testing and administration of a system which has the capability of operating in one of the two modes, B8ZS (Bipolar with Eight Zero Substitution) or the traditional AMI (Alternate Mark Inversion). It presents the operational impacts of the conditions which were demonstrated by tests conducted by the Ad Hoc Group. The results indicate the critical requirement for matching the input signal line code with the line code characteristics of the transmission path, in order to preclude the generation of extraneous errors of a periodic nature in the bit stream. The Ad Hoc Group also found that improper optioning does not appear to have a unique trouble signature and that further study of testing techniques and equipment is required.
